Abstract

Wireless sensor network (WSN) deploys tiny wireless sensor nodes to communicate with each other with limited processing speed, power and security measures. A recent WSN routing protocol defined as Secure Real-Time Load Distribution (SRTLD) has been developed to provide realtime transfer, high delivery ratio, longer sensor node lifetime, and reactive security measures that can counter selective forwarding, sinkhole, wormholes, Sybil, and HELLO flood attacks. However, SRTLD uses broadcast packets to perform neighbour discovery for every packet transfer every hop, thus consume high energy. This thesis proposes a novel Biological inspired self-organized Secure Autonomous Routing Protocol (BIOSARP) to enhance SRTLD with self-optimized and autonomous secure routing mechanism. BIOSARP is an improved version of Biological inspired Autonomous Routing Protocol (BIOARP) and is equipped with security capability. The BIOARP routing protocol depends on the optimal forwarding decision obtained by Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). The pheromone value in ACO is computed based on end-to-end delay, remaining battery power, and packet reception rate metrics similar to RTLD. The proposed BIOARP has been designed to reduce overhead broadcast packet in order to minimize the delay, packet loss and power consumption in WSN. On the other hand BIOSARP has been developed based on artificial immune system (AIS) and is used as a preventive measure to detect abnormalities and to classify non-self neighbouring nodes. Since BIOSARP has been designed on SRTLD platform, it can thus counter additional attacks such as acknowledgement spoofing, altered and replayed routing information attacks. BIOARP has been studied through simulation and tested in real experimental testbed. However, BIOSARP is only verified through simulation. In simulation study BIOARP achieves 14% higher delivery ratio with 12% less packet overhead. Furthermore, power consumption is reduced by 9% when compared to RTLD. BIOSARP uses 24% less processing time, achieves 48% higher delivery ratio, utilizes 48% less battery consumption and experiences 56% less packet overhead compared to SRTLD. The experimental testbed results show that BIOARP outperforms RTLD by 24.75% in terms of delivery ratio. The simulation and experimental results confirm that BIOARP offers better performance than RTLD and can be practically implemented in WSN applications as structural and environmental monitoring, battlefield surveillance.
