Abstract

The IEEE 802.16 standard, also known as Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), is viewed as one alternative to provide last mile access to the internet users. Since almost WiMAX networks pose many problems, including poor QoS for the indoor users and users in the cell boundary, IEEE802.16j Mobile Multi-hop Relay (MMR) Task Group proposes a new relay station (RS) which can be used as an extension to the base station (BS) and relay traffic between the BS and the mobile station (MS). Although the improvement in channel quality, the use of RS in MMR WiMAX networks introduces much delay due to relaying packets through multiple hops. The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is the most commonly used transport protocol on the Internet. The delay of relaying both TCP packets and ACK in MMR WiMAX Networks causes the Retransmission Time Out (RTO) in the transport layer to expire and trigger the TCP retransmission which degrades the throughput of TCP connection. In this project a new bandwidth grant algorithm will be proposed to decrease the delay of the bandwidth request in MMR WiMAX networks. Furthermore, the regular TCP is not suitable for wireless networks because packet losses will occur more often due to unreliable wireless links than due to congestion, and the error recovery mechanism in the Transport Layer and MAC Layer are not aware of each other. So, the cross-layer design is proposed to improve TCP performance on wireless network, specifically, over the IEEE 802.16j WiMAX. The key features of the proposed solution are that the feedback information about channel state and the TCP parameters will be used to adaptively control the ARQ parameters, and retransmission decision between sender and receiver. The cross-layer design is a new paradigm to provide better performance gain. The simulation using Network Simulator will be used to show the performance enhancements of TCP connection over the IEEE 802.16j WiMAX networks.
