Introduction to CT2
CT2 or Center of excellence in Telecommunication Technology was established under the UTM and MIMOS research collaboration. The setup of the center, was a strategic partnership between Telematics Research Group (TRG) in UTM and Wireless Communication Cluster, MIMOS Bhd, a Malaysian premier applied research institution in frontier ICT technologies.
In the memorandum of agreement (MOA) signed in early January 2009 (9th January), MIMOS has granted UTM two key areas of research collaboration and consented to the formation of center of excellent in UTM. The two key research works undertaken are;
1. Secure Real-time Routing for Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and 2. Location Assisted IMS in IPv6 Network.
After a year of formal agreement both of the above research work has been successfully accomplished and the center of excellent has been established and named as UTM MIMOS Center of Excellence in Telecommunication Technology, acronym as CT2. Today, the CoE is actively involved in research work related to future ubiquitous network and pervasive computing in line with the theme of the center Innovating Ubiquitous Network Society. |

Research Area
TRG was initially focusing on research and innovation in the field related to Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), IPv6 networking, ad hoc network and mobile communication, QoS in IP network, and MIMO OFDM based network.
Today with strategic partnership with MIMOS, CT2 has proliferated into a dynamic research center embarking on research area from the physical layer aspect of communication systems up to the application layer software services. Lately, much work in the area of antenna and microwave communication system, network protocol creation and optimization, and applications development in internet multimedia subsystems (IMS) are currently being pursued
CT2, has established its strengths at a range of layers of the OSI reference model. The accumulation of comprehensive knowledge within the CT2 therefore puts it in a strong position to contribute to almost all aspects of the creation of the universal communications systems of the future. The current research area pursued by CT2 include;
1. Wireless Sensor Network, 2. Applications on Internet Multimedia Subsystem, 3. Cognitive Radio and Cognitive Radio Network, 4. Ultrawideband (UWB) network, 5. WiMAX or LTE Advanced Relay Network, 6. RF & Microwave Communication 7. Antenna Technology
The funding of many of the research work are through various government agencies including MOHE, MOSTI, MCMC and collaboration work with industry and external institutions such as MIMOS and ATSB Sdn. Bhd. |

People
CT2 has more than 15 faculty staff members and 45 students who develop technologies and advance knowledge in the areas listed as above. Out of 45 students, about 25 are PhD students and the rest are master student doing fulltime research. On top of that we have master student by taught courses undertaking their projects in the center
CT2 staff members are comprised of 3 Professor, 2 Assoc. Prof. and Doctorate holders. One of the professors is an Adjunct Professor from MIMOS. This has position UTM as the preferred choice for collaboration as the leading institution in telecommunication technology.
Achievement During the last two years the center has achieved many awards at international and national levels. More than 5 gold medals have been awarded to project in the field of Wireless Sensor Network and Antenna related field. |
